Major
Arcana
The Major Arcana is actually a complete Tarot deck in
itself. The twenty-two cards, viewed in numerical sequence, show the stages
of development of the consciousness. It starts with the most basic and
undeveloped level (represented by The Fool) and leads to the most complex
level and ultimate goal of liberation, (The World).
0 - The Fool. Folly,
mania, extravagance, intoxication, delirium, frenzy, betrayment. Reversed:
Negligence, absence, distribution, carelessness, apathy, nullity, vanity.
1 - The Magician.
Skill, diplomacy, adaptability, subtlety, strong will, originality. Reversed:
Abuse of power, confusion, mental disease or upset, disgrace, disquiet.
2 - The High Priestess.
Secrets, mystery, the future as yet unrevealed, intuition, wisdom. Reversed:
Passion, moral or physical ardour, conceit, surface knowledge.
3 - The Empress.
Fruitful action, initiative, comfort and material gain, protection by
a woman. Reversed: Unproductively, the unraveling of involved
matters, dissipation of funds.
4 - The Emperor.
Stability, power, protection by a man, authority, conviction. Reversed:
An obstruction, confusion to enemies, defeat in battle, immaturity.
5 - The Hierophant.
Marriage, alliance, captivity, servitude, mercy and goodness. Reversed:
Nonconformity, indecision, weakness, unconventional understanding or advice.
6 - The Lovers.
Attraction, love, beauty, trials overcome. Reversed: Failure,
foolish designs, marriage frustrated, marital contraries of all kinds.
7 - The Chariot.
Travel, exploration, control of one's life, triumph, self assertion. Reversed:
Riot, quarrel, dispute, litigation, defeat.
8 - Fortitude.
Strength, reconciliation, power, courage, magnanimity, complete success
and honours. Reversed: Despotism, abuse of power, fear, disgrace.
9 - The Hermit.
Prudence, place of refuge, treason, roguery, corruption. Reversed:
Concealment, disguise, fear, unreasoned caution.
10 - Wheel of Fortune.
Destiny, fortune, success, elevation to a position. Reversed:
Cycle of good or bad luck is about to change, acceptance of fate.
11 - Justice.
Equity, rightness, probity, triumph in the deserving side of the law.
Reversed: Unfair judgment, legal complications, bias, severity,
bigotry.
12 - The Hanged Man.
Wisdom, circumspection, discernment, trials, sacrifice, intuition, divination,
prophecy. Reversed: Selfishness, the crowd, materialism.
13 - Death. End,
mortality, destruction, corruption, for a many the loss of a benefactor,
for an unmarried woman failure of marriage prospects. Reversed:
Inertia, sleep, lethargy, hope destroyed.
14 - Temperance.
Economy, harmony, partnership, moderation, frugality. Reversed:
Mood swings, religion, person influencing Querent's marriage.
15 - The Devil.
Materialism, greed, evil influence, lost soul, nothing of value to be
gained. Reversed: Rejection of these, rescue from potentially
dangerous situation.
16 - The Tower.
Misery, distress, traumatic change. Reversed: Growth stunted
by emotions, lack of insight, oppression.
17 - The Star.
Inspiration, insight and understanding, mental and physical health, openness
to new ideas and concepts. Reversed: Failure to find happiness,
closed mind and narrow viewpoint, mental and physical privations.
18 - The Moon.
Hidden enemies, danger, unseen talents or feelings, illicit love, imagination.
Reversed: Upset emotions, instability, inconsistency, silence.
19 - The Sun.
Material happiness, fortunate marriage, contentment. Reversed:
The same, but to a slightly lesser extent.
20 - The Last Judgment.
Change of position, renewal, challenges overcome. Reversed: Weakness,
fear of death, deliberation, delay.
21 - The World.
Assured success, peace and joy, emigration, flights, change of place.
Reversed: Inertia, fixity, stagnation, earth bound, poor rewards.
